About the Author
Dr. Steve Peters is a Consultant Psychiatrist who specializes in optimizing the functioning of the mind. He is Undergraduate Dean at Sheffield University Medical School and the resident psychiatrist with the British Cycling and Sky ProCycling teams.

A Simple Mind Map

As a recreational cyclist of 50 years or so and an amateur racer for the past 30 years and a follower of pro cycling, I had read frequent references to chimps in relation to the elite athletes of British Cycling. I had also read of Dr Steve Peters who works with British Cycling and the Sky Procycling Team. I also knew that his work with the athletes had been extremely successful in helping them win a string of Olympic Gold Medals in Beijing 2008.

I was therefore curious as to what the fuss was about. This book neatly and clearly sums up the concepts applied by the author in his work. His thesis is that we all have 3 parts to our brain, a Chimp who works on emotion and sees things in black and white and a Human who is calm, sensible and logical. Both struggle for control and often the Chimp wins and make us do things in sport and everyday life that we might regret. The Chimp and the Human program the third part of our brain which is the Computer. In other words the part that allows us (amongst other things) to ride a bike, drive a car, and behave in a reasonable manner towards our fellow humans.

Using the concepts and ideas in the book, one can learn how to manage the Chimp to get the best out of sport, work and life. It also teaches us how to recognize and work around other people's Chimps.

I found this book gave me a great insight into the way I used to react to sporting, work and general life situations. It alerted me to the existence of my Chimp and gave me some tools to manage it.

The book is an excellent tool for planning sporting objectives.

Don't expect this book to give you the answers to life's problems but it will certainly give you the tools to help you deal with them.

Wow, this is amazing. You must read this book!

I bought the book because of Dr Peters' reputation, especially from his work within the world of sports psychology.

I read the book in two days and have since bought 4 further copies for my immediate family.

Incredible to say, but this paperback can really change your life. It is written in layman's terms and explains how you can change the way you live your life for the better by understanding what makes you unhappy, angry or frustrated and helping you to be happy and contented instead. This may sound unlikely but Dr Peters manages to describe the problems we all face every day and how to deal with them using simple, practical examples and exercises. I now realise that I can choose to be happy, content and fulfilled and I am working towards that on a daily basis.

I can honestly say this book is changing my life and I would recommend it to anyone!

Lively & useful guide for Tolkien fans

There are any number of Tolkien "encyclopedias," but I believe this is the best. Well-written with ample details drawn from the best of the available Tolkien materials, including the posthumously published "Peoples of Middle-Earth" & "Unfinished Tales," among others. Illustrations include the lines of descent for the Eldar & the Edain, maps of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, & a diagram of the "Spoken Tongues" showing the descent of the various languages of Middle-Earth from the original Quenya (equivalent to our Indo-European). Tyler assumes that his readers are generally familiar with Tolkien's best-known works ("The Hobbit," LOTR, & "The Silmarillion"), so he mostly summarizes the events from those books, while offering more detailed information about characters such as the "weedy & ineffectual" Lotho Sackville-Baggins (son of Otho & Lobelia) & peoples such as Gondor's historic enemies the Haradrim (who are mentioned only in passing in LOTR, but get two full pages in Tyler's book). All of the Feanorian Tengwa characters/letters are included, along with their sound values & the words they also represent, should you decide to learn the Quenya tongue. Comprehensive & entertaining.

Extremely Helpful Guide

Wow, I am so glad that J.E.A. Tyler put together, because the information helped me to get a better grip of who, what, and why. There is so much depth to the Lord of the Rings that is difficult keep to keep track of the story, the languages used and the pronuciations of the names can be daunting to the most avid of fans. However this book helps tremendously. This book added to the my enjoyment of the grandure of the story.

You can never learn too much about Middle Earth

This is a good source of information about Tolkien's writings. It sometimes reads like a novel. The author assumes you are as knowledgable as he is about the Tolkien world so not all the information you want is there. I find Foster's Guide to Middle Earth much better. The Companion is a good additional source of information along with The Atlas of Middle Earth

Originally Billionaire Stepbrother: Our Forbidden Year was published in a series of four separate installments, one for each season of the year. I followed the series faithfully as it was released and absolutely loved it, so much in fact, that I couldn't resist reading it again now that Beaumont has released all four books in one fabulous novel! Thank you Emilia Beaumont and Amazon for Kindle Unlimited! I don't know what I would do without it! This is one WICKED read you don't want to miss and I mean that in a very good way! Beaumont has dazzled her readers yet again with a sultry, seductive and exquisitely enticing love story between wealthy Alexandre "Lex" and his stepsister Aimee. Beaumont uses her amazing talent and incredible skill to tease, tantalize and entertain her readers as only she can. The story is exciting, thrilling, enticing, enchanting, heartwarming, romantic, seductive, arousing, sensual and steamy. Oh, and did I say hot? Yeah Baby, hotter than a cat on a hot tin roof! No spoilers from me but I will say this..... Sexy playboy stepbrother-check! Beautiful sassy stepsister-check! A very devious and heartless mother- check! Secrets, suspense, betrayal and drama-check! Sexual attraction, passion, romance, forbidden love, heartbreaking angst and steamy sex-yeah baby! Hubba! Hubba! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Wow wasn't, what I expected

I was not sure what to think about this story as I first started to read it. I didn't know if he was an abusive man trying to have his way with a young girl or if he really cared for Aimee. I kept read though and am glad I did. Though it was rough for me to get through the first part and into the few chapters of the second their story began to unfold. I was so surprised by the turns her life took and how Lex managed keeping their relationship the way he did. It is a definite five-star HEA endind.

Totally excellent story. I read this when it was several different pieces, and I really enjoyed all of it. Their relationship is smoking hot, and the twists and turns in this story are just superb. Definitely pick this up if you are a fan of billionaire stepbrother romances!

About the Author
Dr. Hult graduated from Washington University Medical School, St. Louis. After a tour of duty as an army medical officer in Germany during the Korean War, he completed his pediatric training in Denver and studied tropical medicine at Tulane University. From 1961-1986 he practiced pediatrics in Denver. For seventeen years he cared for needy children at the Westside Neighborhood Health Center. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Emeritus Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado Helth Sciences Center.

A remarkable story of medical experiences in East Africa.

Dr. Hult has written a truly remarkable story of life as a missionary pediatrician in East Africa. His writing is at all times clear and concise. He brings to life an era in this former British colony then called Tanganyika. For those of us who were there, and who recall the people and places he writes about, it's a nostalgic trip into the past. But for those who weren't there, this book paints pictures that portray humor and pathos, successes and failures, adventure and routine, life and death in a primitive African culture. A must-read for everyone interest in missions, African culture, or just the people themselves.

Wonderful continuation of this fantastic middle grade fantasy adventure graphic novel series.

This is the seventh book in the Amulet series and it feels like it has been taking absolutely forever for these to release. It’s been pretty much two years between each book for the last couple books in this series. That being said this was an incredible addition to the Firelight series. Last I read Kibuishi has ten books planned for this series. This is a series that both me and my nine year old son adore; so it’s a fantasy graphic novel series that is great for middle grade and older readers.

Our characters are split into two parties throughout the story. The vast majority of this book is spent with Emily and Trellis as they visit Algos Island and find out some very startling things about the history of the Amulet Keepers. This part of the story was fantastic. We learn a lot about the Amulet Keepers history and also get some backstory on the accident that killed Emily’s father. We also get some excellent backstory on Trellis and how he was raised.

The other part of the story follows Navin as he (along with the rest of his crew) try to evade the Elves, rejoin the rest of the Rebellion and reunite with his mother. This part was pretty brief but it was good to see what Navin was up to.

The illustration is absolutely spectacular with full color and breathtaking backgrounds. I continue to really really love the illustration style in these books.

The story doesn’t make a ton of progress but some interesting twists are revealed and there is one huge “Oh No!” Moment towards the of the story that will keep readers hooked.

Overall a fantastic addition to the Amulet series, if a long time coming. Wonderful characters, some good progress on the story, and beautiful illustration. I really look forward to and enjoy reading the books in this series. I do wish there was a “the story thus far” at the beginning because it is so long between book releases. I also wish that the story moved a bit faster. However, this is an incredibly well done series and I highly recommend to fantasy graphic novel fans of all ages.

Drop everything and read this series!!!

I recently got into this series last year and I love it!!!!!!!! Kudos to the people who have been reading this series since the first one was published in 2008. I can't imagine waiting that long. The series gets better with each volume in my opinion. It takes me about an hour to read one, so worth it. The worst part is the waiting but totally worth it!!!!

A fine textbook for learning software design

I used Introduction to Software Engineering Design in a graduate course. I found it a very useful text that gives rigorous treatment to the subject. It is a good complement to Larman's "Applying UML and Patterns". Fox is agnostic regarding agile versus heavyweight software development processes but goes into more details than Larman on the different levels of software design.

The book starts by placing software design in the context of design in general. It distinguishes software product design (requirements elicitation and evaluation) from software engineering design (what we normally associate with software design). Fox gives an overview of software product design and then concentrates on software engineering desgn for the remainder of the book.

I liked Fox's continuing case study, an automated irrigation system based on water sensors. He illustrates complete software architecture and detailed design documents using this case study.

Fox clearly illustrates the levels of software engineering design: architecture, mid-level design, and low-level design. He concentrates on component diagrams, class diagrams, sequence diagrams, and state machine diagrams and shows how they should be applied to the various levels of design. Fox shows how to apply design patterns and provides four chapters containing some of the most useful and frequently used patterns. He then applies these patterns to the case study.

Thorough, but a heavy read.

I had this book for a Software Engineering class and I wasn't very impressed. If you are into UML and design this book covers the general details quite well. It seems to prefer a waterfall approach in how the material is conveyed, and so for someone interested in an agile approach this book can be a little frustrating.

For me most of the read was superficial logistics and the book didn't sell the material very well. The material itself is accurate, but a difficult read.

The book I go back to

I recently earned a master's degree in Computer Science / Software Engineering. Of the many books I was assigned, I think this one is exceptionally well-written and helpful. Now that I develop software projects professionally, Fox's book is the one I pull off the shelf for guidance (as I did again today, prompting this review).

Fox clearly put the extra effort into not just making his book logical and correct, but easy to understand. The writing is a cut above the typical CS / SE text. I also applaud it for it's clarity and usefulness in maintaining a strong sense of the entire SE cycle.

In short, if you are interested in Software Engineering, I give this book my highest recommendation. As I say, it is the one book that I'm glad I kept from my classes, because it helps guide my professional work still.
