I wish I would have bought this when I was in Civ Pro I, I got it when I started my semester of Civ Pro II. Breaks it down in a way that easily understandable. Freer is great and this also is a must as his intro was very informative as he explains the style of law school learning, and why they teach it the way that they do! Absolutely phenomenal!

easily the best supplement I've used in law school
By SELMS
easily the best supplement I've used in law school. Not only does Freer write in an incredibly concise, simple, easy-to-undestand manner, but this outline is extremely well-organized. Was absolutely invaluable to me in outlining for civ pro I and II. Civ Pro is challenging material, I honestly wouldn't have gotten through it without this supplement.

About the Author
Upon completing her studies at Miss Havisham's School for Girls, Ms Braden earned a degree in Finance. Armed with a smattering of monetary theory and an understanding of capital markets, she invaded Los Angeles with such stealth that most of the population remains unaware that she lurks within the borders. While her lifelong dream of owning James West's train remains elusive, the underwater lair is coming along quite nicely, thank you. Do drop in. She's been looking for an excuse to test the hound's SCUBA gear.

A Steller Sequel
By Stellalunna
** I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

If you liked "The Devil's Concubine" then the sequel "The Devil Incarnate" will have you enraptured. QuiTai, Kyam Zul, Voous, Hadre and LiHoun along with a few new characters all make their way into the second installment where spying, sabotage and double crossing is at an all time high. Picking up the story right where "The Devil's Concubine" leaves off, QuaTai herself takes on the role of the Devil. Not only does she still not know who is trying to have her killed but now her people are being bullied to the point of starting a rebellion. While she doesn't feel obligated to do anything she doesn't want there to be blood shed either. Feeling like a pawn she has to gain pertinent information and orchestrate a solution to her liking as opposed to her nemesis.

The vivid descriptions are once again masterful and make you feel as if you are there seeing it with your own eyes. The witty and sometimes snarky dialogue enriches the tale while giving new insights to QuiTai business as well as to some of the inner working of the Thampurian caste system.

Braden is a seasoned pro at leaving snippets of information along the trail begging you to figure out who the culprit and scenario is prior to the reveal. This story masterfully answers all questions brought up in the first book, continues to build on the Levapur culture and the for good measure builds intrigue and gives a hint of what will come in the third installment titled "Tempt the Devil".

Who Can You Trust?
By Nan A
The second book in the Ponong series picks up immediately where the first one left off, but rather than linger on the status quo, it barrels headlong into a new series of events that send our fearless QuiTai into the arms of some strange new bedfellows.

While the first book revolved around her relationship with two men- Kyam, the Thampurian spy, and the Devil, the werewolf head of the local crime syndicate, this book sees QuiTai dealing with a new set of men who have their own reasons for wanting to see her downfall. Kyam's cousin, Hadre, is torn between family loyalty and his own career; Captain Voorus, of the local police, is beginning to discover the differences between Thampurian law as written and as practiced. Grandfather Zul has his own plans for everyone's future and the cat man, Lihoon, must tread a thin line between loyalty and self-preservation. QuiTai must hide behind the name of the Devil, while manipulating the price of rice and the distribution of black lotus.

Braden is skillful at fleshing out even the minor characters, such as the Thampurian school teacher, while weaving a sensual story. This book stands alone, telling a complete story, even though it is the second in the series, and yet it leaves us with a desire to know the characters further. I look forward to future installments.

Different in a Good Way
By The Mad Reviewer
[Full disclosure: After seeing that I loved The Devil's Concubine so much after reviewing it for NetGalley, Jill Braden's editor contacted me and sent me a free paperback copy of this second book in exchange for an honest review.]

After The Devil's Concubine was so good, could The Devil Incarnate live up to my expectations? Or would it suffer from the dreaded Book 2 Syndrome?

Once again, Jill Braden blew away my expectations. I won't say that the second book in the series was any better or worse than the first book, but it was certainly different. Different in a good way. In this second book, there was a much bigger focus on the word of QuiTai in regards to the geography as well as the history. We get to learn so much more about how Ponong was conquered by the Thampurians as well as QuiTai's life before becoming the Devil's concubine as we met her in the first book. The thing with this backstory is that it's spread all throughout the book so I didn't feel overwhelmed at any point in time.

Of course we have our old favourite character QuiTai and Kyam, who spend most of their time apart in this book. Consequently, we're introduced to a lot of interesting new characters both directly and indirectly like Grandfather Zul (Kyam's grandfather), Ma'am Thun and Lizzriat. Each of these new characters have very different personalities, motivations and backgrounds so they add to the overall plot rather than just existing so the main characters have someone to talk to.

The thing that constantly impresses me about The Devil of Ponong series is the beautiful imagery Jill Braden uses. When QuiTai roams the streets of Levapur, I feel like I'm there. I can feel the hot, humid air as she strolls among her people and Thampurians; I can taste the rice and see QuiTai stumbling along in her Thampurian disguise on her way to The Dragon Pearl. Since Jill Braden chose to write a fantasy set in a non-Eurocentric world, she really did need to convey the completely different atmosphere of tropical climates and cultures. She most definitely succeeded in that regard.

As always with her writing, I never saw her plot twists coming. Especially the huge one regarding poor Kyam at the end and QuiTai's secret victory over her new nemesis. The plot was a little slower in this book than in the first one, but there's no point where it really drags, even in the middle. Instead, Jill Braden chose to slowly ratchet up the tension and wrote from a few different points of view to give us a glimpse at the larger politics taking place on Ponong. It kept me up reading into the early morning hours, at any rate.

I'm constantly impressed with Jill Braden's writing and still can't believe that this is her first published series. Her third book, Tempt the Devil isn't out yet but I can't wait to see her writing improve even more. If you're looking for non-traditional fantasy, this is definitely the series for you and I can't recommend it highly enough.

I give this book 5/5 stars.

A Genealogy of Modern Architecture: Comparative Critical Analysis of Built Form, by Kenneth Frampton

"A Genealogy of Modern Architecture" is a reference work on modern architecture by Kenneth Frampton, one of today's leading architectural theorists. Conceived as a genealogy of twentieth century architecture from 1924 to 2000, it compiles some sixteen comparative analyses of canonical modern buildings ranging from exhibition pavilions and private houses to office buildings and various kinds of public institutions. The buildings are compared in terms of their hierarchical spatial order, circulation structure and referential details. The analyses are organized so as to show what is similar and different between two paired types, thus revealing how modern tradition has been diversely inflected. Richly illustrated, "A Genealogy of Modern Architecture" is a new standard work in architectural education.

The Co-ed Killer, by Margaret Cheney

The story of Edmund Kemper III first surfaced when at fourteen he killed his grandparents in a cool rage. After five years in a California hospital for sex offenders, this intelligent giant (IQ 136; height 6'9") emerged to carry out the meticulously rehearsed murders of six hitchhiking girls, culminating in the murder, mutilation - and more - of his mother and her friend. Tried and found guilty, Kemper was labeled sane so that he could be given a life sentence in a prison. Margaret Cheney tells a totally compelling story based on Kemper's enormously detailed confession and extensive interviews with scores of those involved with Kemper's gruesome career. At the same time she perceptively explores Kemper's twisted motivations and the implications of his crimes and trial in a culture that seems to actively promote the acceptance of savagery.

The Butcher Of Santa Cruz "Son Knows Best!"
By Kill City Profiler
Edmund Emil Kemper III, 6 foot 9" giant, sadistic necrophile, convicted in a string of brutal mutilation murders around California's Santa Cruz area in the 1970's.

Typical child disturbed behaviours such as, hurting and killing animals, the mutilation of his sister's dolls and finally progressing to murder.

He murdered his maternal grandparents when he was only 14.

Remanded to a state hospital for treatment, Kemper was paroled in 1969 to the one person his psychiatrists recommended him never see. His mother.

Between May 1972 and February 1973, he murdered five co-eds from the local university. He mutilated their bodies, decapitated their heads and had sex with their headless bodies. He took the heads with him and buried them up in the mountains where he resided with his mother.

In April 1973, he killed his mother and one of her friends that were visiting.

He killed her with such fury, he cut off her head and hands, raped her lifeless corpse and placed her head on a mantle piece and threw darts at her severed head.

He tore her larynx out placing it down the garbage disposal. He stated that even then she never stopped bitching at him due to the fact that the garbage disposal unit jammed and spat her larynx back out.

He finally decided to give himself up and voluntarily surrendered to police and subsequently received a life sentence, which he is still currently serving.

Margaret Cheney's book is the best and most detailed account of Kemper's case.

Chasing up the first printing is a very expensive and difficult experience but a must for the true-crime collector. Chasing up a near fine copy with a clean dust-jacket is an even harder one.

A cheaper alternative is a revised, updated and re-titled edition from the original 1976 Walker Publishing book `The Co-Ed Killer' titled: `WHY- The Serial Killer In America'

A Hundred Summers, by Beatriz Williams

As the 1938 hurricane approaches Rhode Island, another storm brews in this novel from the author of The Secret Life of Violet Grant.
“Blends history, romance, and social commentary into...much more than a summer guilty pleasure” (Connecticut Post)

Memorial Day, 1938

Lily Dane has returned to Seaview, Rhode Island, where her family has summered for generations. It’s an escape not only from New York’s social scene but from a heartbreak that still haunts her. Here, among the seaside community that has embraced her since childhood, she finds comfort in the familiar rituals of summer.

But this summer is different. Budgie and Nick Greenwald—Lily’s former best friend and former fiancé—have arrived, too, and Seaview’s elite are abuzz. Under Budgie’s glamorous influence, Lily is seduced into a complicated web of renewed friendship and dangerous longing.

As a cataclysmic hurricane churns north through the Atlantic, and uneasy secrets slowly reveal themselves, Lily and Nick must confront an emotional storm that will change their worlds forever…

From Booklist
Dashing football hero Nick Greenwald is catapulted into the rarified milieu of Park Avenue penthouses and Ivy League campuses in the uncertain days of the Great Depression when he falls in love with Lily Dane. The meeker (though more polished), moral, and beautiful best friend of Zeldaesque flapper Budgie Byrne, Lily is immediately smitten with Nick’s determination and strength, an attraction the manipulative Budgie doesn’t encourage, though she doesn’t necessarily discourage it, either. After all, Nick is Jewish, and Budgie is confident that Lily’s socially conservative family will never condone the match. They don’t, and Budgie profits from the rift, marrying Nick on the rebound, while Lily nurses her broken heart. Seven years later, the Greenwalds turn up at Seaview, Rhode Island, the perennial summer enclave for the Danes, Byrnes, and other WASP stalwarts, and their renewed presence in Lily’s life unleashes a storm of unexpected consequences. Williams’ sweeping saga of betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption trenchantly examines the often duplicitous nature of female friendships and family expectations. --Carol Haggas

A Hundred Summers: A Perfect Beach Read
By Tina Says
In 1931 two socialite college girls, Lily Dane and Budgie Byrne, attend college football games to watch Budgie's boyfriend play. Lily meets Nicholsen Greenwald at a game, and the two are instantly struck by each other. Their courtship is marred by the fact that Nick is Jewish, and when Lily attempts to introduce him to her parents they are adamant that Lily end the relationship.

Things have always seemed a bit easier for Budgie whose boyfriend, Harrison, is eventually cast aside for a different boyfriend, a pattern that repeats itself often in Budgie's life.

Now 1938, Lily is summering at Seaview, the beach house her family has vacationed at for generations. Budgie will be arriving shortly at her family's beach house, and Lily is nervous for her arrival since the two haven't spoken in years. In addition, Budgie is now Budgie Greenwald, having married Nick, who had once been the love of Lily's life.

The chapters alternate setting between 1931 and 1938 and I raced through each chapter in order to discover what occurred between Lily and Nick that ended what appeared to be a perfect love affair. As I read secrets were revealed - enjoyable especially since I didn't foresee any of them in advance. I fell in love with Nick, a gentleman from the book's beginning and wanted both he and Lily to find happiness.

The cover of this book perfectly captures this time period, which in addition to the 1930s setting, also is marked by the Hurricane of 1938 that swept away entire beach communities like Seaview where Lily and Budgie had summer homes.

A Hundred Summers left me with a book hangover; every title I have picked up since hasn't held much appeal.

Beach Read with a Hurricane Warning
By Ms Winston
Ever since I heard about the New England hurricane of 1938 I have been fascinated by it -- those of us who live along the East Coast today are thankful that the National Weather Service, the Hurricane Center, and the Weather Channel can keep us updated almost to the minute as to when a hurricane will strike. In 1938, folks were not so lucky. And into the literal hurricane comes Hurricane Budgie back into the life of our heroine Lily Dane, bringing with her Lily's former love, Nick Greenwald, now Budgie's husband.

The book alternates between 1931/2, when Budgie and Lily are great college friends, and Lily is in love with Nick, and 1938, when the September hurricane resolves many issues. There are secrets to be solved, and one of the biggest is why Nick left Lily, and how he ended up married to Budgie years later. We also need to resolve the issue of who is the mother of Kiki, five years old in May of 1938 -- is she Lily's sister or her daughter? Kiki is actually one of the weakest parts of this novel, as proof that the author, Beatriz Williams, cannot write realistic dialog for children. If you were not told that Kiki is not quite six years old in 1938, you would probably think she was an older teenager. At one point, Kiki says, speaking of herself: "Let the child have her fun," which is rather improbable dialog for a child not even in 1st grade. And it only gets worse later in the same chapter, when Kiki sees a man who is a stranger to her: "Well, hello. I haven't seen you around before." Anyone who is a parent or grandparent can recognize that most five year old children do not talk this way. And there is not really much to my mind that is terribly remarkable about Kiki that would make her sound that mature. To be fair, many writers cannot deliver realistic dialog for children, and tend to want to make them sound much older than their years.

Some readers were surprised that there was so much anti-Jewish sentiment in the United States in the time period that the novel is set, but those who know their political and social history are aware that it was an issue. Nick Greenwald has had to deal with this most of his life and that is why it is somewhat improbable that he got mixed up with Budgie. Now we would call Lily and Budgie "friendamies," that catch-all term to describe someone who is on the surface your friend, but, you discover, sometimes too late, that the person doesn't have your best interests at heart. Lily also has another "friendamie" that she is going to marry -- Yankee's pitcher Graham Pendleton, whom she also knew in college. Lily's Aunt Julie is a droll, if rather cliche, character of the crusty old aunt or grandmother or neighbor type who drinks a little too much but has the great big heart of gold. The climax of the novel is the hurricane, which is told in realistic and breathless terms. My overall feeling about this book is that it deals with vital issues of prejudice and betrayal, of fake vs real friends, of secrets that wound for years before they are finally resolved. For the most part, with the exception of the odd Kiki dialog, it is well-written and holds the interest of the reader.

Jerry Springer For The Elite (Contains Spoilers)
By Quirky Girl
Even if you add in "historic" events, a well-to-do family, racism, - this story, if told today, is nothing more than a Jerry Springer show.
Budgie is the well to do girl, who guys adore, who seems to have it all, including the man her best friend (Lily) loves. There is a switching of partners. And Budgie ends up with Lily's "one true love" and Lily becomes engaged to Budgie's old flame.
There is nothing about Budgie in the whole (almost 400 pages)to make the reader her like her one bit. And then, suddenly (SPOILER) - we learn in the last few pages, in a few sentences, that Budgie was molested by her father. It's just kind of thrown in there. Oh, by the way, here's why I've been a mean girl all my life. Then she gets swept away a hurricane. Wow, how convenient. Now Lily can finally marry the man of her dreams! And, even though Nick was married to Budgie - (SPOILER)he only had sex ONCE with her and that was prior to their marriage. Uh huh. Ok.
I read this book by the pool, and more than once someone asked me what was wrong because I had a scowl on my face. "This book is so freaking ridiculous!" Was always my answer. As least I got a good tan.
This book is NOTHING like Gossip Girl. At least with GG, the "mean" characters were somewhat empathetic. The only character that came close to being likeable was Nick - but that's not to say I ever came to like him.
Flat. Dull. And explanations thrown in at the very end like someone suddenly remembering to add salt to a stew - and by then, it's far too late.
Hated This.

A BIG step backwards from the 3rd edition!
By Seregil
I have taught academic English to university-level non-native speakers for over 30 years, and Azar's grammar series was a solid rock that I could build my courses on...until now.

Yes, this 4th edition has CDs, pretty colored pictures, and lots of conversational exercises, but from an academic perspective, despite its slick add-ons, this is NOT an improvement over the 3rd edition--in fact, in some ways it is a step backwards, particularly for academic-bound international students who may continue to use English internationally.

It is truly dismaying to see what has been deleted from the 3rd Edition to make room in the 4th Ed. for the CD listening exercises and strictly American colloquial items, at a time when internationalized English is most important.

I could write for quite a while about what essential academic English has been sacrificed, but just as one example, the "troublesome verbs" (i.e., raise/rise, sit/set, lay/lie), which often appear on the TOEFL and cannot be dispensed with in formal writing, have been relegated to a brief section in the appendix, and the 3rd Edition's excellent exercise for these verbs has been removed COMPLETELY!

Another thing that is important for university-bound students, the word "whereas" - which was presented in the 3rd Ed. along with "while" as a subordinator showing contrast - is now only mentioned in a small footnote. This is further dismay, considering that "whereas" is in technical writing a more precise, exclusive subordinator to indicate contrast, whereas [!] "while" doubles as a time subordinator.

Furthermore, the new "improved" list of irregular verbs omits the past participle "stricken" (used for situations of suffering), but it now includes the exclusively American informal "snuck" as a FIRST CHOICE for the past tense of "sneak"! Now my students may write: "Sadly, much of Africa has been STRUCK with AIDS" and "The illegal aliens SNUCK past the border patrol."

Betty Azar had achieved a fine textbook in the 3rd Edition, but the modifications that have been made in the 4th Edition (I suspect not fully approved by Azar) are largely regressions to U.S. colloquial English and are wastes of time for a teacher trying to train academic-bound students.

Update: 9 March 2011

I continue to be more and more gravely disappointed with this 4th Edition of a once fine grammar book. I discover more essential things deleted from the 4th Edition each time I teach from it. For example, the usage of the subjunctive (e.g. "It is critical that the President BE conciliatory in the future negotiations") has also been relegated to the appendix and Azar's fine exercise on the subjunctive has been removed entirely.

I am also upset that lessons on the perfect (a.k.a. past) infinitive and gerund forms have both been completely eliminated, so without supplementation by the teacher, students will not be taught to understand or to form constructions such as the following: "The teacher of the advanced level expects the students to have learned the irregular verbs." "Having just been hired for a lucrative position in an import-export company, he appreciates more than ever having mastered two languages."

NB: A NUMBER OF THE POSITIVE REVIEWS LISTED UNDER THIS 4th EDITION WERE ACTUALLY WRITTEN FOR THE THIRD EDITION.

Update: 23 October 2012

I STILL continue to find more serious flaws in this 4th edition. I realize now that the Stative Passive of the 3rd Edition (i.e., passive constructions that are more like adjectives - "I'm tired", "The computer is broken", "The door was locked, so I couldn't get in.") is now called in the 4th Edition "NON-PROGRESSIVE PASSIVE" - a TOTALLY erroneous term for this construction!

A progressive passive would be "The new student is being given a placement test at the moment"; a non-progressive passive would be just a basic passive: "New students are given placement tests before they are placed in classes" -- not at all a stative passive. The gross flaws and shortcomings of this 4th edition are egregious!

As an instructor, I wish I could use a different book.
By N. Prokup
I teach from this book, and I would not suggest it to anyone looking for an ESL grammar book. There are many inappropriate examples (not teaching the structures they claim to). The biggest problem is probably that the answer key of both the book and the workbook are filled with errors, which makes things very difficult for the learner. Grammar is not explained very thoroughly. The book is lacking in visual stimuli, which are good to use to facilitate student discussion. (There are pictures, but they do not contextualize information, but simply illustrate a sentence or two.) Additionally, there is no coherence to the chapters. That is, no topics are covered, and therefore there is no extensive reading, and the grammar is always seen in a fairly decontextualized setting. The exercises in the book are not very diverse, mostly fill in the blank. Students almost never have to produce the entirety of a sentence on their own, and there is no extensive writing exercises.

On the positive end, the book does have many graphs and tables that are nicely laid out.

If you are looking for a good self study grammar book I would suggest Raymond Murphey's Grammar in Use. It has better explanations and is much more affordable. Another good book is the new Grammar and Beyond series by Randi Reppen (http://www.amazon.com/Grammar-Beyond-Level-Students-Book/dp/0521142938/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1355181069&sr=1-2&keywords=grammar+and+beyond)
