Worthy of your time and consideration
By E. Lemieux
This book does say that there is a system. It says that the system exists to regulate the rules and realities around us. It argues that instead of wasting time by fighting the establishment through countercultural behaviour, we should make the effort to reform and improve the structures that exist.
It goes on to further show how counterculture behaviour cannot only arrest development, but that its antisocial ideas and actions can harm us. Instead of behaving like adolescents, pointing fingers at the corporations that only sell us what we demand, we should be building a better society through real political process. This distinguishes thoughts and actions between dissent and deviance.
Perhaps you're like me, having already read "No Logo" & "Fast Food Nation". You were a punk in high school and are still seeking ways to "smash the system". Instead of trying to destroy 2000 years of culture, as Atari Teenage Riot would have us do, we should follow the conclusions that the authors reach. This book actually offers sound advice, rather than simply complain. Their ideas are practical and realistic.
Anyone interested in evolutionary psychology will feel at home with terms like "competitive consumption". The authors recognize that our quest for status affects those around us. What they object to is when your aspirations begin to harm society, when it is threatened by zero-sum games. Your attempts at distinguishing yourself from the masses could not only be pointless, but damaging. See their sections on the prisoner's dilemma, where they expand on that borrowed concept.
The authors rarely self-identify during the book, and I found this single voice to facilitate the reading experience. It was a wise decision. Overall, the writing is excellent, especially considering the critical nature of the topic. They also include the word "smacktard", which should be added to your everyday conversation.

Defending social justice from counterproductive radicalism
By pmusaraj
The Rebel Sell is the most thought-provoking and enjoyable critique of contemporary social and political myths that I have read in a long while. It is carefully argued and extremely engaging. It's a ruthless critique of many icons of contemporary thought, from Klein to Foucault, from Marx to Freud as well as a fascinating interpretation of North-American culture, from American Beauty to Kurt Cobain, from alternative culture to environmentalists. And this is the exact reason why those involved social critique and political activism should read this.
The central argument of the Rebel Sell is simple: since the 50s and 60s, the problem with left-wing politics is that it misdiagnoses the source of problems in society. While the critique of mass society identifies the source of problems in the inhuman and deeply repressive nature of "the system", Heath and Potter argue that 1) there is no such thing as the system and 2) most problems in our society are "collective action problems". The book is excellent at demonstrating the deeply individualistic and entrepreneurial nature of counter-culture and at showing how it feeds, and not rejects, the 'system'.
I was personally fascinated by the role of 'collective action problems' and the left's failure to address them. For instance, the authors argue that the source of most violence in society is rational. Following Freud, the left has ignored this fact, and focused on emotions and instincts. Similarly, the authors argue that consumerism is very much a product of defensive competition in the struggle to maintain status in society. Hence, SUVs, gun ownership, tuition fees, etc. are 'collective action problems', the solution to which does not rest in individual choices, but rather in collective decision-making.
There is a lot more in the book than just this. The authors in fact do an impressively good job at moving from philosophical arguments to actual examples. The sections on the social construction of taste, the importance of cool as a positional good and the discussion of alternative lifestyle are fascinating. In addition, the book has a great index and a very accurate bibliography.
For anyone that is genuinely interested in the social problems of contemporary society, this book is a must-read. It is not a manifesto for political action: in fact, it's most successful achievement is the accurate critique of the most prominent movements and ideas of our time. It is fascinating (and deeply troubling) to see how hypocritical and misguided political movements have been recently. A focus re-shift is necessary, and here's where to start.

good idea bad execution
By C. Williams
don't get me wrong. the rebel sell has some great ideas in it, ideas about how we each reinforce the social system even at the same time we denounce it. ie. you can't refer to the masses unless you include yourself as well. The Rebel Sell is a good critique of the modern counter-cultural idea. But unfortuantely the book's concept is not well formed and readers may have a tough time trying to tie it all together.
The Rebel Sell suffers from terrible writing, endless pointless examples that had me dreading turning the next page, hoping in vain that I would find a stunning conclusion, and not just another dismissive tirade. let me give you an example of my biggest annoyance. One of the first chapters takes us through Freud's concepts on the mind and how they still influence our thinking and hence our cultural perspective today. It's a wonderful chapter that had me nodding my head, intriuged, until the chapter abruptly ends with 'but Freud was proven wrong and discredited, so there.' umm, what? care to elaborate? the authors make a lot of these statements. I think the authors mistook a plethora of examples for concrete arguments. the chapters themselves do not vary alot, and i found you could pick up any page, read a few paragraphs, find another page at random, and feel like you didn't miss a thing.
Also, the authors consistently come off as incredibly condescending, and I got the ironic impression that they were trying to start a counter-counterculture movement, or I'm so uber-punk that i've come full circle and wear a suit and work at Halliburton. Actually that sums up the book well.
but if you can get through the book and distill the concepts, it may change the way you look at all our various cultures, counter-cultures and subcultures.

Historical heart-wrencher
By Yankeelin
A slim volume that packs a punch in so few words....tho a reader may WANT more, one doesn't NEED more.

With clear, concise writing Zirogiannis has encapsulated and shared the emotional beginnings of his grandparents and fathers lives in WW2 Greece. The first few pages fly by.. but then you intentionally slow down, turn those pages with horrid anticipation. You know what the outcome must be but keep hoping for a different ending anyway.

At first i was disappointed truth be told. I so desperately wanted more. Yet as i lay curled up in bed thinking about the book, it hit me like a ton of bricks. The author got his message.. the meaning.. the jolt of emotion.. across to the reader with so few words that he has proven just what an exceptional writer he is!

Batwoman Soldiers On
By Slim Cat
This volume collects issues 0-5 and to clear up any confusion, due to different solicits, is NOT a deluxe hardcover but a standard hardcover. Sadly.

Batwoman issue 0 is a hold over from the old DCU. The dead give away is Batman's emblem, the yellow background with bat on top that Grant Morrison made the trademark for old DCU Batman Inc. It is Batman/Bruce Wayne scouting Batwoman/Kate Kane to figure out if the identity matches and if she is worthy to be one of Gotham's protectors. Almost a precursor to Greg Rucka's written and J. H. Williams drawn Batwoman: Elegy. A fanatic read and highly recommended before going into this story.

Issues 1-5 is the Hydrology arc and the intro of Batwoman into the new 52, but it picks up right where the above mentioned "Elegy" storyline finished. New readers do not fear, as all needed information is given. This is still a relatively new franchise. Kate is still at ends with her father and the tragedy that befell her sister. But a crimefighter has little time to rest in Gotham City as a watery ghost called "The Weeping Woman" is drowning children and leaving the authorities clueless. Kate also has her over eager yet not psychology ready cousin, Bette Kane, a.k.a. Flamebird, itching to go as her sidekick. Kate also has romance woes with Detective Maggie Sawyer of the G.C.P.D. And has gotten the interest of a supernatural division of the D.E.O. from an Agent Chase and Director Bones (it's a fitting name).

Let me talk about the art first as it's just too exciting. J. H. Williams III works magic on the page. His stylish and intricate layouts. His gorgeous styles. He draws a more mundane Kate Kane and then a vampiric Batwoman that haunts the criminals she engages. Also, a lot of credit to one of the best colorists in the business, Dave Stewart. Batwoman's reds are burning, her blacks deep as night, and the whiteness of her face is the palest of pales. Amy Reeder, who does the Kate sequences in issue 0 is pretty good. But when Williams is the featured artist, everyone else sharing the page looks inferior.

The story is gripping and intense. It gets away from the main focus of "The Weeping Woman" a bit too often as it juggles multiple plot threads, but this is not a frustration as each thread is entertaining and deserving of it's given time. Kate Kane lives her life. It's one of the appeals of this character. She is not too wrapped up in "the mission" to sacrifice her personal life but when she is Batwoman she is all business. She also is still relatively new to this, so there are those learning bumps that would be fatal for a lesser vigilante, but due to her military background and who she is and what she has dealt with she manages to overcome. You love to root or her.

I have no idea how much of the writing Williams does but it is a relief that a top tier illustrator knows their strength is in the art and willingly accepts the aid of a career writer. W. Haden Blackman is there to keep him honest and to tell a coherent story. That ideal was finally realized on "Batman: The Dark Knight", but sadly is still not accepted over at "Detective Comics". (I love Tony Daniels' art but the man cannot write!)

One of the main appeals of this series is although it's a Bat title, Batwoman operates on her own. Yes, she was inspired by Batman and realizes it's his turf but in this series they do not team up and she does not take orders from him. She wears his sign out of respect, respects the local P.D., does not kill, and has meets to chat but is not one of his agents. I loved the fact that when Scott Snyder was revving up to do the Night of the Owls crossover and asked all the other titles creative teams to join, Williams and Blackman said, "Thanks, but no thanks. We have our own side of Gotham to explore". That trickles down into this character as well.

Great story. Great character. GREAT ART. Great series. Cannot wait to soldier on to the next volume.

"Is there anywhere in Gotham that doesn't have blood stains?"
By H. Bala
I guess I'm doing a disservice to J.H. Williams III's writing and W. Haden Blackman's writing, but I've this urge to rush thru the plotline summary so that I can proceed to obsess over what's really got me stoked about this series. Thankfully, here's Katherine Kane in DC's New 52 relaunch. BATWOMAN Vol. 1: HYDROLOGY collects issues #0-5. Unlike most (or any other?) rebooted series in the New 52, BATWOMAN picks up from the continuity of Kate Kane's tragic pre-Flashpoint existence (see Batwoman: Elegy).

As things stand, as this new series opens, Kate Kane has had a parting of ways with her father, Colonel Jacob Kane, him what's been her invaluable weapon/tech support and personal trainer and all-around mentor. Kate not only holds her father responsible for her maniacal twin sister's recent death, she's also pretty cheesed at him for having kept her sister's being alive a secret for all these years.

In her father's absence the Batwoman has recruited her cousin, Bette Kane (a.k.a. Flamebird), as her field sidekick. Kate will need all the help she can get as she investigates the serial abduction and murder of Gotham's children. Frightened whispers in the community point her towards the disturbing urban myth of La Llorona, "The Weeping Woman," a tormented ghostly figure that quenches her deep misery by ruining the lives of others, namely by stealing and drowning their innocent children.

A quick segue: The legend of La Llorona: supposedly a neglectful woman who allowed her children to drown, after which she killed herself, after which she came back as a vengeful spirit.

W. Haden Blackman and J.H. Williams III write an absorbing tale, maintain that hardboiled, noirish edge. Sure, I miss the heck out of Greg Rucka's storytelling. But Blackman and Williams III keep a fascinating pulse on Batwoman. Kate Kane's wrenching personal baggage still consumes her, still very much drives her actions. And, uh oh, here's the Batman with an offer she... can't... refuse?

While the writing is, of course, invaluable, comic books is still predominantly a visually-oriented medium. I don't know how long these following folks have actually been in the four color biz, but, to me, they're a relatively fresh-faced crop of superstar artists whose work I'm now trying to track down. Folks like Fiona Staples, Sara Pichelli, and Phil Noto (who I think has been around for a bit now). But as good as them other folks are (and they're very, very good), J.H. Williams III steals all thunder. No other current artist gets me more psyched than Williams III. He's today's Jim Steranko. I love the explosion of creativy and flow that he brings, and the sheer dynamism. He enchances mood and atmosphere thru the application of innovative panel compositions. I dig how he gets all Will Eisnery in how he incorporates elements such as chapter titles into the visual narrative. J.H. Williams III and static storytelling are, like, mortal enemies. I'm a big fan of the guy. And so are you.

An excellent follow-up to the previous volume
By RobertM525
When I heard Greg Rucka didn't write Batwoman after the initial volume (the fantastic Batwoman: Elegy), I was incredibly disappointed. I assumed that someone else would take over and transform the character into a typical comic book cheesecake.

But J.H. Williams (artist for Elegy) as done a great job in Rucka's absence. Granted, I'm seeing the typical creep of tropes surrounding female comics characters (e.g., convenient excuses for the characters to be undressing on the page), but it's not too bad and certainly not enough to ruin the book.

Williams' layouts continue to be very avant garde, and while they're nice to look at, they aren't always ideal for readability.

All in all, a very good book and a character I'm anxiously looking forward to following if the series can maintain this level of quality.

Mystics, by William Harmless

Mystics are path-breaking religious practitioners who claim to have experience the infinite, word-defying Mystery that is God. Many have been gifted writers with an uncanny ability to communicate the great realities of life with both a theologian's precision and a poet's lyricism. They use words to jolt us into recognizing ineffable mysteries surging beneath the surface of our lives and within the depths of our hearts and, by their artistry, can awaken us to see and savor fugitive glimpses of a God-drenched world.

In Mystics, William Harmless, S.J., introduces readers to the scholarly study of mysticism. He explores both mystics' extraordinary lives and their no-less-extraordinary writings using a unique case-study method centered on detailed examinations of six major Christian mystics: Thomas Merton, Bernard of Clairvaux, Hildegard of Bingen, Bonaventure, Meister Eckhart, and Evagrius Ponticus. Rather than presenting mysticism as a subtle web of psychological or theological abstractions, Harmless's case-study approach brings things down to earth, restoring mystics to their historical context.

Harmless highlights the pungent diversity of mystical experiences and mystical theologies. Stepping beyond Christianity, he also explores mystical elements within Islam and Buddhism, offering a chapter on the popular Sufi poet Rumi and one on the famous Japanese Zen master Dogen. Harmless concludes with an overview of the century-long scholarly conversation on mysticism and offers a unique, multifaceted optic for understanding mystics, their communities, and their writings. Geared toward a wide audience, Mystics balances state-of-the-art scholarship with accessible, lucid prose.

Review

"In an era of growing interest in mysticism the need for introductions that are clear and accessible without sacrificing scholarly rigor and depth of understanding is great. Few books meet this exacting standard, but William Harmless's Mystics proves that the balance between outreach and analysis is not an impossible task. Harmless's Mystics, based on years of classroom experience in teaching mysticism, is a model for a concise and thoughtful approach to this intriguing, but difficult, topic. It will be necessary reading for all those who wish to explore the message of the mystics." --Bernard McGinn, Emeritus Professor at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago and author of The Presence of God: A History of Western Christian Mysticism

"Harmless has provided a deep and readable history and commentary on the mystics he has chosen. His judicious selection ofpersons and texts, joined by his insightful discussions, make for a text indispensable to any graduate course on the history of spirituality."--Religion

"Developed for classroom use (where it would likely be the highlight of the course), Harmless's book deserves readership by anyone seeking entry into a study of mystics and why they matter." --Theological Studies

"Mystics is firmly rooted in the best scholarship, but it is also pitched low enough for readers new to the subject. Teachers will find that it makes an excellent itnroductory text. Perhaps the highest recommendation I can give this book is to say that I intend to assign it to my own students." --Commonweal

"This book opens up a new area of study for specialists in the history and language of the Nordic countries, offering a tantalizing range of insights that invite further investigation." --peculum

A classic is born
By Kerry Walters
I've been teaching college-level courses on mysticism for a lot of years, and I've used lots of different secondary commentaries to try to help students (and myself!) better appreciate the writings of the mystics we read. But I've never quite been satisfied with any of them.

Now, Jesuit scholar William Harmless (what a wonderful name!) has published a book on mysticism (which he modestly calls an introduction) that overwhelms me with its insight and method. Harmless adopts what he calls a case study approach. Instead of talking in general terms about mysticism and then illustrating the general analysis with specific references to individual mystics--an enterprise that has obvious procrustean dangers--he prefers to focus on individual mystics, fulling exploring their biographies and historical contexts as well as their writings, and letting the case studies guide the general discussion. His concern not to "impose some predefined, extrinsic framework" (p. 225) on the mystics he explores--Merton, Bernard of Clairvaux, Hildegard of Bingen, Eckhart, Evagrius Ponticus, Rumi, and Dogen--really does invite the reader to experience the richness of their words and experiences, rather than too quickly tucking them into neat conceptual pigeonholes.

Harmless' final chapter, in which he explores the question of how best to define mysticism, is the single best short analysis I've ever read. Consistent with his fondness for the case study method, Harmless argues for an understanding of mysticism that recognizes both religious pluralism and changing historical concepts--that recognizes, in other words, mysticism as a "macro-concept" that avoids the "bloating" that comes either from seeing it as the experiential foundation of religion in general or from insisting that all mystical experiences are cut from the same cloth. He also has some interesting things to say about the boundaries of mystical experience--that is, whether a nonreligious one is possible.

Harmless ends his book by reminding us of Rahner's claim that mystics, extraordinary hearers of the Word who they are, remind the rest of us that we likewise are called to be hearers. "For Rahner," writes Harmless, "mystics matter because they are paradigms of the human condition. They make clear a God who reveals God's self" (p. 268).

This book, I'm confident, will be THE text on mysticism for some years to come. We're all greatly in Harmless' debt.

a narrow spectrum
By Avid reader
This book is an instructive introduction into several important mystics. But it also seemed to me a book flawed in its methodology which proposes general conclusions about the nature of mysticism on the basis of a very narrow spectrum of case studies. First to the instructive part: Instead of giving a general survey of mysticism, Harmless concentrates on eight case studies (six Christian mystics, one Sufi and one Zen mystic). His approach works very well and I have learned a lot, particularly from his treatment of the Christian mystics that are closest to his scholarly expertise (the early church fathers). This is his primary focus and in this he succeeds.

In addition, however, H. uses these case studies to set off modern scholarship on mysticism from older approaches, especially the approach that William James popularized 100 years ago. James becomes H.'s permanent boogieman, and the endless, repetitious stabs against him seem increasingly tedious and often rather unfair. What H. wants to emphasize is that mystical experiences are never purely individualistic achievements by solitary religious geniuses but are always firmly grounded in coherent religious traditions, clearly circumscribed communities and texts, ritualistic performances, linguistic contexts etc. True enough for the cases he presents us with. But let's also acknowledge that H. makes it very easy for himself to deduce these conclusions by choosing his case studies from a conveniently narrow spectrum: Six of the eight mystics were monks and one was a nun, and seven of the eight lived before 1328. Are these cases really representative enough to come to such general conclusions? Thomas Merton, the one mystic of today discussed by H. (more individualistic, more eclectic across several mystical traditions) clearly shows the first cracks in H.'s self-assured claims. H. regrets that he did not have time and space to include Protestant mystics. That's a real pity. What would the inclusion of a man like the Quaker George Fox or of William Blake or Emanuel Swedenborg, or of the German cobbler Jacob Boehme or the French intellectual Simone Weil have done to his views? There is no doubt that coherent religious traditions, religious communities, and ritualistic performances play less of a role in modern mystical experiences. H.'s view of mysticism might very likely have to be substantially modified once he allows a fuller spectrum to be considered.

An Analytical Hagiography of Roman Catholic Mystics & More
By Didaskalex
"Uncontrolled, the hunger and thirst after God may become an obstacle, cutting off the soul from what it desires. If a man would travel far along the mystic road, he must learn to desire God intensely but in stillness, passively and yet with all his heart and mind and strength." Aldous Huxley

Revival of Mysticism:
Why are writings by Thomas Merton and Matthew Fox so popular today? Why did Dr. Inge, late dean of St. Paul's (known as the Gloomy Dean) profoundly interested in Mysticism but not liturgy, writing "Christian Mysticism,' and supporting Evelyn Underhill? He was an advocate of 'Personal Religion'.
Recently, a mystical sister said, "... our connection with our souls, our missions on earth as souls, and our experiences of God within our souls are the most important parts of life. ... So, we are not satisfied with the ideas about soul, God, or spirituality. Instead of just thinking about interesting spiritual concepts, we seek, find, and develop the deepest experiences of soul, light, and God."

Mysticism is not Theosophy!
J. D. Buck gave, in June 1897 Theosophy Magazine, a distinctive definition, "Mysticism is not Theosophy, though there are certain elements common to both, and the two terms have been often applied by different writers to the same individual. No history of either Theosophy or Mysticism would be complete that left out any prominent mystic or theosophist. ... Mysticism has more often been emotional, than philosophical, and hence is strongly characterized by religious devotion. Tauler was a typical mystic and it is said of him that in his sermons he was often so wrought up by his emotions, and the idea of union with God, that he could no longer speak or stand, and was carried out fainting."

Early Christian Mystics:
Christian mysticism may have been established by Clement of Alexandria and Origen, in his Exhortation to Martyrdom, and carried by the writings of his disciple Evagrius Ponticas to Europe. There were the Essenes, the Therapeutae, the Gnostics and the Alexandrine Neoplatonists during the early centuries. Even earlier there were Biblical Jewish mystics since the writing of the third book of Psalms by Asaph.
"Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside.
I was so foolish and ignorant, I must have seemed a senseless animal to you.
Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.
Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth." Psalm 73: 21-25

Mysticism in Late Antiquity:
In the year 824, the Byzantine Emperor Michael sent a present to Lewis the Mild," The treatise of the great Miaphysite mystic Dionysius (the pseudo Areopagite, 553); translated into Latin by Joannes Scotus. This treatise contained the most advanced mystical theology: 'On the Celestial Monarchy'; 'On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy'; 'On Divine Names' and his crown work 'On Mystical Theology', which is the core of the Eastern Orthodox Church theology to this day. These books were eagerly read by the Western faithful, and Church members, without the Pope's sanction; and were soon condemned by Pope Nicholas the First.

Corpus Areopagitum:
One mystical question was dealt with throughout the whole work: How does the Loving Lord share his life giving nature with his creation? Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, observes that the writings derive from an elaborate fifth century Neoplatonic system, and Harmless suspects it was wrote by a Syrian follower of Severus of Antioch, regarded as one of the foremost wonder maker mystics, was the greatest defender of Cyril mystical definition for the nature of Jesus Christ (Hypostatic union)

Roman Catholic Mystics:
Mystics are hands-on faith applicators who strive to touch the infinite Lord of love. Many were inspired writers using their pen to jolt us into their world of ineffable mysteries touching the surface of our lives and echoing within the depths of our conscience, and spiritual imagination. The religious fervor of Giles, a follower of St. Francis in the thirteenth century, was so intense that he experienced states of ecstasy during which he levitated off the ground. The event, is depicted as Giles entering into 'divine ecstasy' before the seated Pope, and a light illuminates the monk's head against the dark background.

Harmless's Mystics:
So, William Harmless, S.J., who indulged us in the mystical gardens of the Desert Fathers, introduces us now to the scholarly Mystics of the Roman Catholic Church, and more. He explores celebrity mystics' lives and their unique writings using his analytical method to explore six Roman Catholic mystics: Thomas Merton, Bernard of Clairvaux, Hildegard of Bingen, Bonaventure, Meister Eckhart, and the Desert trained Evagrius Ponticus. Rather than presenting mysticism as Wm James' psychological or Gerson's theological abstractions, Harmless's hagiographies brings mysticism down for scholarly analysis, and his analytical study methodology restored mystics to their historical context.
Harmless categorizes the perceptive diversity of mystical experiences and mystical theologies. He also explores Theosophical traditions within Islam and Buddhism, following the guidelines of J. D. Buck. He offers a chapter on the popular Sufi* poet Rumi and one on the famous Japanese Zen master Dogen. Harmless concludes with an overview of the century-long scholarly conversation on mysticism and offers a unique, multifaceted view for understanding mysticism as mystics, their communities, and their writings. Targeting a wider audience, he chooses to instruct us by telling us Mystics hagiographies, balanced by analytical scholarship that utilizes the eloquence of the writers of the Philokalia, in lucid English prose.
