Original Sins Revisited
By Robert Attaway
I bought the original version of the Hellblazer volume 1 trade-paperback a few years back. I read it, loved it, but could not afford the rest. It wasn't until recently that I was able to, but now I enter into a very holey place (pun not intended). Most of the trade-paperbacks are out of print and even when they weren't, they were still missing some of the comics from the earliest run. It's very tiring and trying to strive and find the complete story. And then I found this. This...reissued, re-released of the first trade-paperback.

This version contains the first nine issues of the main series, "plus" Swamp Thing issue 76-77, a continuation of the story from the end of the Original Sins. As well as a brand new cover for the volume.

To be honest, I was mad at first. I mean, I got this for the same price as I got the original version and this includes more of the story. But the art and coloring is unchanged, even for the Swamp Thing issues.

But, after thinking about it for some time, I came to the conclusion: this is a good thing. It means, hopefully, that they well repackage, reissue, and re-release all of the older trade-paperbacks and even bring back some of the out of print volumes.

It comes down to this:
Everything is exactly the same as the original release of "Original Sins." Same issues, same coloring, same artwork, the only thing that they did add was the tie-in Swamp Thing issues, which is a cool bonus for this. This will hopefully lead to more trade-paperbacks coming out with previous unreleased issues and out of print stories. The book already got 4/5 stars from me the first time, now with added bonuses and new hopes it's now 5/5 stars.

EDIT* Thanks to N.J. "Nadare" for the correction.

Welcome to a Fallen World
By Jacob M.
Not too long ago I saw a trailer for an upcoming show called Constantine and I was blown away by how cool it looked. I found out it was based on a comic book called Hellblazer and five minutes of research later I was looking on Amazon for the first book. The premise and protagonist were so brilliant I knew I would love it right away. After reading Volume 1, I'm proud to say that I was right.

Hellblazer tells the story of John Constantine; a cynical, foul-mouthed, chain-smoking, Liverpudlian magician, con-man, and occult detective who protects humanity from black magic and demons. Despite being a master sorcerer, he rarely ever uses magic. This is because unlike most people, John understand the dangers of his art. He chooses to only use magic as a last resort, instead relying on his talent for manipulation to get himself out of bad situations. Batman may be the world's greatest detective, but John Constantine is the world's greatest con-man. This talent makes him a very morally ambiguous character. He'll save hundreds of people, but manipulate and use them in order to do it. He's not a hero and he doesn't try to be, he's just a guy making a living doing what he does best. Unfortunately this living has been the death of several close friends who continue to haunt him years later. John Constantine is a brilliant character. Despite being morally ambiguous you can't help but love him and hope he wins. Even if you don't like the story, Hellblazer is worth reading just because of its protagonist.

This book contains the first nine issues of the comic, referred to as the Original Sins arc. The story is very episodic, the issues being only loosely connected to each other. Together they serve as an excellent introduction to the world of Hellblazer. It's a bleak world full of demons and fools who would sell their souls just for a taste of magic and the chaos that comes with it. It's a world where the good guys don't always win, and even when they do it isn't always a happy ending. In one chapter, an entire town is torn apart while John watches in horror. Another shows a demon that could easily end civilization, and to stop it John has to do something horrible. Of course Hellblazer isn't all depressing. There is actually a lot of humor, usually provided by the cynical protagonist. Not only that, but when John does win, it's usually by completely outsmarting his enemies. There is a lot of variety in the chapters, something I really appreciated. They aren't the greatest stories I've ever read, but they were still very enjoyable. Jamie Delano's writing is excellent; it's obvious why people consider him the definitive Hellblazer author.

The artwork by John Ridgway was great as well. While I waited for the book to be delivered to my house I read the first few pages on my kindle and, to be honest, I really didn't like it. However once I actually got the book and started reading, I began to appreciate the art a lot more. Personally, I think it suits the world of Hellblazer very well and I'm going to be a bit disappointed when I finish Ridgway's run. Unfortunately I'm sure a lot of people aren't going to like the artwork as it hasn't aged nearly as well as other comic from the 80's.

This book also contains two issues of Swamp Thing, the series John Constantine first appeared in. I'm not very familiar with Swamp Thing, but the two issues were entertaining enough and extra content like this is always great

The book itself is good quality. The cover art is done by Jim Lee and looks awesome while also giving people who haven't read it a good idea of what's inside. The pages are average-quality and nothing special, something I've come to expect from Vertigo after reading a couple other books of theirs. The book was in perfect condition when it arrived, however the packaging wasn't the best I've seen and it looked like it could have easily been ruined on the trip. No harm was done of course, but I think they could have put more effort into making it secure.

Overall John Constantine, Hellblazer Volume 1 was excellent. The main character is fantastic. So fantastic that after I finished reading the book I immediately wanted to buy Volume 2 just to see more of him. The story and artwork, while not the best I have ever seen, are both enjoyable and you get a lot of content for a low price (I've paid the same for comics that were half as long). Like most comics from Vertigo, Hellblazer is not for kids. It's a horror-mystery story full of disturbing monsters, morally-questionable characters, and other adult content. Personally I'd recommend it for ages 15 or older, but that's just me. If you're a fan of horror, detective-fiction, or stories involving the occult and supernatural, then you owe it to yourself to read John Constantine, Hellblazer.

Constantine at his best! (with bonus Swamp Thing!)
By BlueStar
This new version of the Original Sins TPB includes the first 9 issue of Hellblazer from 1988 along with issues #76-77 of the Swamp Thing. The first nine issues of Hellblazer involve a man named John Constantine who plays a role between heaven and hell and keeps the people safe from their literal demons all while being shunned from those of a higher, heavenly authority. The first issues involve Constantine helping an old friend who ended up releasing a demon named Mnemoth who makes people develop a voracious appetite for that which they covet and they eventually starve from it. Constantine is forced to use his contacts and find the evil beast plaguing the people and coax it right into a trap! Later, after thwarting a bit of demon politics, he meets a woman named Zed who becomes quite the love interest all the while helping him find a lost girl in a sickening kidnapping and then, after heading to the states to check on his old buddy Swamp Thing, encounters a man from `Nam that is still haunted by the mental wounds of war that envelope him. Constantine, hot on the trail of a religious sect, learn that he's not the only one who wants Zed and figures out that the cult has taken her and is using her as a "virgin Mary" of sorts and it's up to him to get her out of her predicament!

In the issues of Swamp Thing, the Swamp Thing possesses Constantine's body to bear a child with Swamp Thing's wife but she is (rightfully) uncomfortable with the whole ordeal and doesn't truly believe it's Alec in Constantine's body and not just Constantine himself playing a devious trick. As she flees to think things through, she encounters the real Constantine back in his own body and learns that he's really out to protect her and bring her back to her love.

These 9 issues of Hellblazer and two issues of Swamp Thing really do a fantastic job of story telling. There are points when you can really tell it's the late 80s (lots of talk about AIDS and politics) but the dialogue really draws you into the story and the art keeps you hooked. This isn't an actiony beat-em-up like other comics but a dark, gritty world of magic and evil where one man walking the spiritual line is the only hope for a chance at normality. This was a truly great read and one I highly recommend to anyone wanting a fantastic comic to flip through. This new edition with the extra issues (not to mention, cover gallery) is a definite plus as well!

Useful as a summary of CPRs for someone studying for the OCS or just wants to try to incorporate some evidence based information into their treatment.

This is a great PT reference book.
By Daniel W. Higgins
This is a very good book. It basically summarizes all PT related clinical prediction rules and puts them all in one book for you. It discusses clinical prediction rule in regards to evaluation, treatment and prognosis. There is also a nice section on the stats that are commonly used with interpretation of the rules. Each rule is broken down and gives the level of evidence, the components of the rule, if you rule has been validated, etc. The only downfall of the book, in my opinion, is that when it gives the stats, the author uses terms such as mild, moderate, etc., instead of giving the actual number value or percentage of the stat. Overall very satisfied with the book. great learning tool.

Awesome ... for a few body parts.
By DR PT Lake Tahoe
Pros:
Slim and lightweight - I keep it at work, well organized, simple test descriptions with pics, all stats included.
Cons:
Expensive for a limited range of PT diagnoses, a lot of 'fluff' and filler - it prob could've been half the size.

Bottom line:
Good if you create your own evals because you can add these 'random' tests to your special testing section and have a 95% chance of correctly diagnosing your pt in half the time if they meet the criteria. Also good for differential diagnosis of non-musculoskeletal disorders. As an intern, I've found it useful in predicting manip success, but I haven't used it for much else yet.

Something has gone wrong. A group of American bombers armed with nuclear weapons is streaking past the fail-safe point, beyond recall, and no one knows why. Their destination -- Moscow.

In a bomb shelter beneath the White House, the calm young president turns to his Russian translator and says, "I think we are ready to talk to Premier Kruschchev." Not far away, in the War Room at the Pentagon, the secretary of defense and his aides watch with growing anxiety as the luminous blips crawl across a huge screen map. High over the Bering Strait in a large Vindicator bomber, a colonel stares in disbelief at the attack code number on his fail-safe box and wonders if it could possibly be a mistake.

First published in 1962, when America was still reeling from the Cuban missle crisis, Fail-Safe reflects the apocalyptic attitude that pervaded society during the height of the Cold War, when disaster could have struck at any moment. As more countries develop nuclear capabilities and the potential for new enemies lurks on the horizon, Fail-Safe and its powerful issues continue to respond.

A low-flying eagle
By Elizabeth A. Root
Just to let you know where I'm coming from,, I'm not a big fan of hardboiled detectives, but a friend really wanted me to read these, They were at least o.k., sometimes even pretty good, but after reading this one , I told him never to bring me a Spencer novel again. He tried, but I handed it back to him. He claimed the characters went back to how they were before, but I can't wash this one out of my mind.

One thing that I demand in a book is that the author persuade me to accept the characters at his/her evaluation of them; otherwise the book doesn't work. I have been told that this is childish, but it is not only that I have to spend hours with these people, but that there is a serious dissonance if the author wants me to be holding my breath worrying about the protagonist, and I am in fact thinking that I'd like the antagonist to gut-shoot him.

I got the feeling that this was supposed to be a "major" novel; it's a thriller rather than a detective story. I thought it was too much of too much; all it needed for the kitchen sink to fall on someone's head. With a little rewrite, it could be a parody of the thriller. The characters were much worse than the strained plot. We have been watching Susan's moral compass deteriorate in the last couple of books -- it's completely out of whack here. She had taken up with a very wealthy, very controlling man out in California. Now she wants to leave, but she is scared, so she calls Hawk to rescue her, and in the melee he ends up in prison, possibly looking at a life sentence. So now Spenser is called upon to rescue them both.

It is at this point that Parker seems to show that he realizes that the reader might not have the best opinion of Susan, because when the other characters find out that Spenser is going to see Susan, they keep remarking on what a "special" person she is. Very unsubtle, and very bad writing. If we can't decide that Susan is a good person from her thoughts and actions without being bashed over the head with it, it seems clear that even the author realizes that he might have painted himself into a corner. The adjective that comes to mind to describe Spenser is a little rude, so let's just say that he is pretty thoroughly emasculated by his attachment Susan, even if still macho in other regards. In fact, perhaps in an effort to bolster Spenser's flabby character, the title is taken from this quote by Herman Melville:

"... and there is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the sunny spaces. And even if he forever flies within the gorge, that gorge is in the mountains; so even in his lowest swoop the mountain eagle is still higher than the other birds upon the plain, even though they soar."

I think this eagle got lost and drowned in the sea.

Anyway, after busting the slave labor out of the camp where Susan's latest ex is holding them prisoner, and talking to his terrorized ex-wife, and being pursued all over the country by violent men, there comes a crucial moment when it would really help if Susan gave Spenser and Hawk her ex's phone number. But in another display of inverted morality, Susan decides that she had a "real" relationship with the man who tried to hold her prisoner, got Hawk thrown in jail when he tried to help her, and is now trying to kill at least Spenser and Hawk, and maybe her, too, and tells them that it would be dishonorable for her do something that would help them against her violent ex. And the totally emasculated Spenser accepts that. What really destroys the already strained credibility, is that Hawk accepts it. Maybe he can't slap her around with Spenser there, but he can at least go through her purse or at least be disgusted that while she expects him and Spenser to get her out of a mess of her own making, she doesn't feel that it would be appropriate for her to be helpful.

Pathetic.

By the end of the book, I felt that Spenser had lost the moral standing that was supposed to justify illegal and semi-legal actions.

Not the Spenser we know.
By kikeo58
Changed the formula. Blurred Spenser with Everett Hitch. Throw in some 007 work. Robert Parker thought women were trash. Except for Susan Silverman. Then this book made Susan leave Spenser for a rich gun dealer. Spenser and Hawk run around killing people all over the country. Not the Spenser we know. Not Susan either. Susan comes back. But the plot is ludicrous. Sigh. I guess Parker got tired of Spenser. Forget this book and go read Small Vices.

A precautionary tale
By Spenser Calderin
What would happen if a computer error set a nuclear war in motion? This book explores that question and also the question of whether or not technology has supplanted us. Given that this book is several decades old, it is interesting to see the conclusions the author reached. It is also a pretty good read. Suspenseful and even despite the topic enjoyable. Why 3 stars? Because I disagree with the author...and that is perhaps unfair. Read it anyway.

"The strengths of this book are the comprehensiveness of its coverage and the excellent schematic diagrams of friction and wear mechanisms provided to clarify the text."
Industrial Lubrication and Tribology

Complicated tribological concepts and theories are introduced extremely clearly. This is one of the reasons why we believe that this book will be beneficial not only for beginners in this field, as it was the authors' original intention of this textbook, but also for experienced specialists. -Tribology International

This well-illustrated textbook is a valuable source of information for anyone working and/or studying in the field of tribological and mechanical engineering, i.e. researchers, lecturers, engineers and students. Due to the excellent content of this book, it would even justify a price twice as high as demanded... -Tribology International

From the Publisher
A basic feature of Engineering Tribology 2nd Edition is the emphasis on describing various concepts in an accessible manner for the benefit of non-specialists. This principle is applied from the beginning of the book, where the reader is introduced to the fundamental concept of tribology. This concept is then used to show how the various topics in tribology are interrelated to form one coherent subject. A direct graphical illustration of the mechanisms controlling tribological phenomena is presented. Carefully prepared diagrams allow rapid appreciation of the basic ideas and facts in tribology. The numerical analysis of hydrodynamic lubrication is supported by a number of computer programs which are included in the book. The control of wear is given extensive treatment with a thorough discussion of lubricant additives, solid lubricants and surface coatings. The effectiveness of coatings in suppressing specific forms of wear is analyzed together with the methods of coatings deposition. More than 1000 references are provided to give the reader access to more specialized information if required.

Stachowiak and Batchelor
By A Customer
Tribology is an extremely complex field that encompasses a vast variety of scientific disciplines and includes the work of such scientists as Newton and Raleigh. Stachowiak and Batchelor have produced a technical guide suitable for students, professional engineers and experts alike. It is a complete reference for tribology encompassing such diverse material as lubrication methods (Boundary, EHL etc), design and condition monitoring.
The authors have a knack for presenting otherwise inaccessible material in a manner which is easy to digest. Material, sourced and adapted from an extraordinary array of reference sources, is combined with innovative diagrams that complement the text rendering explanations of exceptionally high clarity.
Programs, based on the theory presented, are included at the rear of the book presenting the practicing engineer with invaluable tools for the design of tribological devices.
